Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli Resigns Amid Violent Anti-Corruption Protests

Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday following two consecutive days of violent anti-corruption protests that have rocked the nation. The unrest, led largely by Gen-Z demonstrators, intensified after the government revoked a controversial social media ban, sparking further outrage over alleged state corruption.

Amid escalating tensions, all domestic and international flights at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) were suspended around 12:45 PM, following reports of smoke near the Koteshwar area. According to TIA General Manager Hansa Raj Pandey, operations were halted due to “serious and unprecedented” security concerns. The shutdown comes amid speculation that top political leaders, including PM Oli, may attempt to flee the country.

Earlier in the day, an all-party meeting was convened by the outgoing Prime Minister as protests flared again in the capital. Demonstrators reportedly torched the headquarters of the Nepali Congress party in Sanepa, Lalitpur, and set fire to the private residences of PM Oli (Balkot), President Ram Chandra Poudel, and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

The latest wave of unrest has claimed at least 19 lives and left over 400 injured. The Kathmandu District Administration Office has imposed a curfew starting at 8:30 AM until further notice to contain the violence.

In response, the Indian government issued an advisory urging Indian nationals in Nepal to exercise caution and follow local directives. India has also increased security vigilance along its 1,751-km shared border with Nepal.
