The Life Journey of Dr. Surinder Bedi (Steve Bedi)

My parents were married in December 1941 in Dera Baba Nanak, India. I was born on December 31, 1942. My father was one of the few educated men of that time — he had earned a Bachelor of Arts degree under British rule.

When I was four months old, my father left us to become a yogi. During a train journey, he accidentally woke up a 70-year-old saint while getting down from the upper berth. The saint slapped him twice — once for waking him up, and once for abandoning his family in the name of spirituality. He reminded my father of his spiritual responsibilities within worldly life, not outside it. My father returned home and chose to live a yogic life while staying in the world.

In 1947, during the Partition of India, we moved from Peshawar (now in Pakistan) to Delhi. I completed my education there. I was athletic and active in school but also a bit mischievous.

After graduating high school in 1959, I joined pre-medical studies and later pursued MBBS at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. Along the way, I had various intense life experiences, including injuries, spiritual teachings, and early exposures to telepathy and intuition.

In 1967, I moved to the United States with my brother and started my medical internship in Detroit, Michigan. I completed surgical training and later specialized in urology. I worked at various hospitals and clinics and was known for taking initiative, challenging unethical practices, and developing my own methods.

Over time, I grew disillusioned with conventional medicine’s dependence on drugs and surgery. Inspired by natural healing and spiritual teachings, I shifted my practice to focus on lifestyle medicine, nutrition, conscious living, and minimal medical intervention.

In 1974, my parents joined me in Florida. My father — a yogi, teacher, and my closest companion — became ill with heart failure. Despite heavy medications, his health didn’t improve until I applied natural treatments I had learned in Mexico in 1980. Within a month, he was off most medications and living a healthier life. This experience transformed my entire medical approach.

Between 1980 and 1984, I treated hundreds of patients with heart disease, diabetes, prostate issues, and even cancer using integrated, holistic, and conscious care — often without drugs or surgery. I hosted a radio show and was invited to television programs to share my ideas.

However, my innovative methods upset some traditional doctors. In 1984, a complaint was filed against me, and my medical license was suspended for two years.

Message of Life

My father taught me that life is an illusion (Maya), but true spirituality is living in the world with awareness, love, and responsibility. Healing is not just of the body, but of the soul. A doctor should awaken consciousness, not just prescribe pills.
