Ongoing Air Pollution Crisis Poses Health Emergency in Delhi-NCR

The Union Health Ministry has issued an updated advisory as toxic smog continues to blanket Delhi-NCR, pushing PM2.5 levels far beyond emergency thresholds. Hospitals have reported a 22% spike in asthma and COPD cases in the past five days, with AIIMS doctors warning of a potential 40% OPD overload if conditions worsen.

Vulnerable Populations

Senior citizens, children, and pregnant women are particularly at risk. Exposure to high levels of particulate matter can trigger respiratory distress, cardiovascular problems, and long-term lung damage. Morning hours are especially hazardous due to dense smog accumulation.

Preventive Measures

Authorities advise using N95 masks, indoor air purifiers, and avoiding outdoor sports or early morning walks. Schools are being advised to suspend outdoor activities temporarily. Hospitals are increasing staffing to manage the surge in respiratory cases.

Environmental Implications

Data shows Anand Vihar and Jahangirpuri hitting the “severe+” category with visibility dropping to 200 meters. Experts highlight that long-term urban planning, green spaces, and stricter vehicle emission controls are necessary to prevent recurring public health emergencies.
