The Hidden Cost of Entropy: A Doctor’s Reflection on Health, Environment, and the Human Condition

In a thought-provoking reflection on health, environment, and human behavior, Dr. Baba Steve Bedi connects the scientific concept of entropy with the growing physical and societal decay seen in modern life.

Entropy, commonly understood in physics as the gradual decline into disorder, is more than just a scientific term, says Dr. Bedi. “Conditioned unconsciousness and entropy are synonymous,” he explains. “Our fears, insecurities, greed, and ego are all internal forms of entropy that reflect in the outside world as pollution, disease, and moral degradation.”

Referencing Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Bedi reminds us that Gandhi believed personal battles – with fear, insecurity, and ego – were far more difficult than external ones. “Gandhi’s lifelong experiments with truth were centered on self-awareness and personal responsibility,” he says.

According to Dr. Bedi, modern health challenges such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are often consequences of our disconnect from nature and an imbalanced lifestyle. “When we live against the law of nature, we increase entropy in our own bodies,” he adds. “This leads to premature aging, reduced immunity, and chronic illnesses.”

A Visit to Alwaye

Dr. Bedi recounts a personal experience from 2013, when he visited an old friend, Basheer, a wealthy contractor in Alwaye. Despite living in a marble-floored mansion and earning over ₹10 crores, Basheer suffered from multiple health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and chest pain.

“His diet was heavy in salt, animal fat, and alcohol. He chewed paan, rarely exercised, and was constantly stressed,” recalls Dr. Bedi. “Despite all his material success, his body was in a state of maximum entropy.”

In stark contrast, Dr. Bedi points to a laborer named Tony, who was digging ditches with his wife and young child nearby. “Tony had no body fat, no medical issues, and he was content with his life,” says Bedi. “He sleeps well, works hard, and embraces life fully.”

Entropy in the Environment

Dr. Bedi draws parallels between the entropy within human health and the decay in our environment. He notes that the pollution of cities, mounds of garbage, and rampant construction using substandard materials are signs of a deeper internal crisis.

“Lack of awareness, greed, pride, and ego all manifest in the physical world as environmental degradation,” he warns. “Entropy is not just a scientific law—it’s a spiritual and social reality.”

Lessons from Gandhi

The message, he says, is simple: return to nature, embrace simplicity, and take personal responsibility.

“Gandhi lived a natural life. He had no diabetes or high blood pressure and walked five miles a day, even in his old age,” says Dr. Bedi. “He showed us that discipline, truthfulness, and physical activity are essential to a healthy life.”

Dr. Bedi suggests small steps to reverse personal and environmental entropy: exercise regularly, avoid excess salt and sugar, stay away from processed food, and respect the body and nature.

He encourages people to set an example for their children. “Put on your jogging clothes and carry a bag to pick up garbage. Clean the streets, breathe cleaner air, and help Mother Nature heal.”

A Call to Action

Dr. Bedi concludes with a powerful message: “Entropy is not just about energy loss in physics. It’s about what we lose when we ignore the truth, when we prioritize wealth over health, and when we forget our connection to nature and one another.”

His reflections serve as a wake-up call—not just for individuals but for society at large—to recognize the unseen forces shaping our health, environment, and future.
